ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Sample Questions and Answers

Quick Answer

ISO 27001 Lead Auditor sample questions help you practise for the exam at the end of a CQI IRCA approved Lead Auditor course. The exam tests how you audit an information security management system against ISO/IEC 27001:2022, not just whether you remember definitions.

Below you'll find a quiz, then the exam format, topics, difficulty, preparation and what comes after passing.

Introduction

If you're planning an ISO 27001 Lead Auditor course, you've probably wondered what the exam will ask of you and how much weight it carries. Sample questions are a good way to get a feel for it, but they work best when you also understand how the exam is set out.

This article starts with a quiz, then explains what the exam is, who takes it, how it's structured, how hard it tends to be and how to prepare. Where a point comes from CQI, IRCA or ISO, the article says so. Everything else is general information, so confirm current arrangements with your training provider before you book.

What Is the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Exam?

The exam is the written assessment on a Lead Auditor course for ISO/IEC 27001:2022. According to CQI's ISMS Auditor/Lead Auditor course listing, learners must pass a written examination and also show acceptable performance in three learning objectives, which are assessed through practical tasks and activities as well as the exam.

Those objectives cover the purpose and benefits of an information security management system (ISMS), ISMS standards, management system audits and third-party certification. They also cover the auditor's role in planning, conducting, reporting and following up an audit, and the skill of doing that for an ISO/IEC 27001 audit.

It's easy to mix up the exam with a certification audit, so the table below separates them.

Who is assessedYou, as a course learnerAn organisation's ISMS
PurposeShows you've met the course's assessment requirementsChecks the ISMS against ISO/IEC 27001

In short, the exam is part of your training. It isn't a certification of your own, and it doesn't make you a certified auditor.

Who Needs to Take the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Exam?

Anyone who completes a CQI IRCA approved ISO/IEC 27001:2022 Lead Auditor course sits the exam as part of it. No law requires it. It matters if you want training that can support an application to IRCA, or if an employer, client or certification body expects an approved Lead Auditor qualification. Typical candidates include:

  • Internal auditors who want to move into leading audits and audit teams.
  • Information security, compliance and risk professionals who want to understand auditing from the auditor's side.
  • Consultants who support organisations through ISO/IEC 27001 and want a recognised auditing qualification.
  • Professionals aiming for an auditing career with a certification body or as an independent auditor.

CQI recommends some prior knowledge before the course: management systems, including the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle, information security management principles, and the requirements of ISO/IEC 27001 along with ISO/IEC 27000 terminology. It suggests its Foundation (FD134) course or an equivalent for anyone who needs to build that background.

If you mainly audit your own organisation, an Internal Auditor course may suit you better. The comparison of Internal Auditor and Lead Auditor training sets out the differences.

ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Exam Format

CQI's online exams guide for learners describes the Lead Auditor exam as an online, open-book test of 40 questions, completed in 1 hour and 45 minutes across five sections. CQI's course listing, by contrast, refers to a two-hour written examination. Because the two descriptions differ, confirm the current arrangement with your training provider.

CQI's course listing also gives a minimum of 40 hours of training for the course. How a particular provider schedules and supports the exam is explained in 3FOLD's Lead Auditor e-assessment guide.

What Topics Are Covered in the Exam?

CQI describes the skills being assessed as planning, conducting, reporting and following up an ISO/IEC 27001 audit, with guidance from ISO 19011 on auditing management systems and from ISO/IEC 17021 where appropriate. The exam is about how you audit against the standard, not how you would implement it. In practice, the topics fall into the groups below.

ISO/IEC 27001 Requirements, Clauses 4 to 10

You'll need to know what each main clause asks of an organisation and what an auditor would look for as evidence. These are the clause titles in the standard, shown here as general information.

ClauseTitleWhat an auditor looks at
4Context of the organisationScope, interested parties and the ISMS boundary
5LeadershipManagement commitment, policy, roles and responsibilities
6PlanningRisks and opportunities, objectives, risk assessment and treatment
7SupportResources, competence, awareness, communication, documented information
8OperationOperational planning, risk assessment and treatment carried out
9Performance evaluationMonitoring, internal audit, management review
10ImprovementNonconformity, corrective action, continual improvement

Risk Assessment, Risk Treatment and Annex A

Risk assessment and risk treatment sit at the centre of an ISMS, so expect questions on how an organisation identifies risks, chooses treatment options and records its decisions. Annex A of ISO/IEC 27001:2022 lists information security controls. As general information, it contains 93 controls grouped into four themes: organisational (37), people (8), physical (14) and technological (34). As an auditor, you aren't expected to design controls. You check whether the organisation has decided which controls apply and whether they work as intended.

Audit Planning, Evidence, Findings and Reporting

The audit side of the exam covers how you plan an audit, gather and evaluate evidence, and decide whether what you've found is a nonconformity. It also covers writing findings clearly, reporting conclusions and following up on corrective action. The exam's five sections, as shown in 3FOLD's course information, are set out below. This is 3FOLD's own published information and not a CQI document.

SectionQuestionsMarks
1. Concepts and principles of management standards and systems68
2. Audit concepts and auditor responsibilities68
3. Planning the audit68
4. Conducting the audit1436
5. Reporting and closing out the audit820

On those figures, conducting the audit and reporting carry 56 of the 80 marks.

How Difficult Is the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Exam?

It's manageable if you've followed the course and practised, but it isn't a formality. Open-book doesn't mean easy, because the time limit and question style do much of the work. Forty questions in 105 minutes works out at under three minutes each, so there's little time to search your notes for every answer. You also can't go back once you've moved on.

The hardest questions are usually the scenario ones, because they ask you to apply the standard rather than recall it. Here's a simple example. During an audit, an auditee tells you their user access rights are reviewed regularly, and shows you a review record from last year. What should you do?

A strong answer doesn't accept the statement or the single record as proof. You'd ask how often the organisation says it reviews access, check the records for the period you're auditing, and sample a few users to see whether their access matches their role. Only then would you decide whether there's a finding. The skill being tested is gathering enough objective evidence, not knowing a single clause number.

CQI's course listing also warns that assessment questions may relate to prior knowledge that the course doesn't cover, which is why the recommended background matters. This article doesn't quote a pass rate, because there's no official figure to cite.

How to Prepare for the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Exam

Good preparation is mostly practice with the right material, done under realistic conditions. These steps work for most candidates.

  1. Close any knowledge gaps. If PDCA, ISO/IEC 27001 requirements or ISO/IEC 27000 terminology feel unfamiliar, revise them before the course begins.
  2. Take part fully in the course. Group activities and practical tasks build the skills the exam tests.
  3. Organise your notes and your copy of the standard so you can find clauses quickly. Check with your training provider what you may mark up or use.
  4. Learn the audit process, not just the clauses. Be able to describe how an audit is planned, carried out, reported and followed up.
  5. Practise under time pressure. Aim for roughly two and a half minutes per question, and review every wrong answer to see which requirement or audit step you missed.
  6. Keep the auditor's role in mind. Many wrong answers come from treating good advice, such as telling the auditee how to fix a problem, as part of the auditor's job.
  7. Check your set-up. The exam is remotely proctored, so test your webcam, microphone and connection beforehand and use only the permitted device.

A simple pattern can help. The table below is general guidance, not an official study plan.

Study activityWhat it buildsSuggested use
Reading the standard clause by clauseFamiliarity with the requirementsBefore and during the course
Writing your own audit questionsUnderstanding of what evidence looks likeDuring the course
Timed practice quizzesSpeed and exam techniqueIn the last week
Reviewing wrong answersAwareness of your weak topicsAfter every practice session

What Happens After Passing the Exam?

Passing the exam completes the course. It doesn't make you an IRCA-certified auditor. CQI's course listing says that completing the course successfully, within the five years before applying, satisfies the training requirement for initial certification as an IRCA ISMS auditor.

Certification itself is a separate step. IRCA's published Lead Auditor criteria include passing an IRCA certified course and a minimum amount of audit experience, summarised below.

IRCA Lead Auditor Criteria (as Published by IRCA)

RequirementDetail
TrainingPassed an IRCA certified auditor/lead auditor course
Audits covering the full audit cycleAt least 4 audits totalling at least 20 audit days, including at least 15 on-site days
Audits led as team leaderAt least 3 full audits, totalling at least 15 audit days, including at least 10 on-site days
Total7 audits, 35 audit days and 25 on-site days
TimingAudits must fall within 5 years of the application date

IRCA's page also says remote audits are accepted, with the time recorded as on-site time. It doesn't mention ISMS specifically, so confirm the requirements for the ISMS scheme directly with IRCA, since criteria can change. The steps are set out in how to become a CQI IRCA certified auditor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Sample Questions the Same as the Real Exam Questions?

No. Sample questions are practice material and aren't the live exam questions. They help you check your understanding, but they can't predict your result.

Is the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Exam Open-Book?

Yes. CQI's learner guide says the exams are open-book, so you can refer to your course notes and need a copy of the relevant ISO standard. You can't use the internet to search for answers.

How Many Questions Are in the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Exam?

CQI's learner guide gives 40 questions in 1 hour and 45 minutes, across five sections. CQI's course listing mentions a two-hour written examination, so confirm the current format with your training provider.

What Is the Pass Mark for the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Exam?

CQI's learner guide and ISMS course listing don't state a numeric pass mark. 3FOLD's ISO 27001 course page gives a minimum of 40 out of 80 marks plus a minimum in each domain, so confirm the current marking rules with your training provider.

Does Passing the Exam Make You an IRCA Certified Auditor?

No. Passing the exam completes the course and meets the training requirement. IRCA certification also requires audit experience that meets IRCA's criteria and an application to IRCA.

Can You Resit the ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Exam if You Fail?

CQI's learner guide doesn't set out a general resit policy. It mentions a free resit only where a significant technical problem caused by CQI's online system affected your performance, so ask your training provider about its resit arrangements and fees.

What Prior Knowledge Is Recommended Before an ISO 27001 Lead Auditor Course?

CQI recommends knowledge of management systems, including PDCA, information security management principles, ISO/IEC 27001 requirements and ISO/IEC 27000 terminology. It suggests its Foundation (FD134) course or an equivalent.

Conclusion

Sample questions are a useful way to find your gaps, but the exam rewards candidates who understand how an audit is planned, carried out and reported. Practise under timed conditions, and give the conducting and reporting sections the most attention.

Remember that passing the exam is the training step. Becoming an IRCA-certified auditor comes later, once you meet IRCA's audit experience criteria and have applied.
